Crying is a baby's first language.

Through their crying, babies are sending intentional and unintentional signals about their condition. Observant listeners can discern differences in baby cry acoustics and with enough experience can correlate differences in cries to different conditions.

Acoustic analysis of infant cry has been a focus of our team’s clinical and developmental research for decades. Through our applied and clinical studies of infant cry we have demonstrated that features of baby cry can be correlated to babies with specific conditions or medical risks; baby cry can be used as an indicator of the immediate condition or future development of the baby.

Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome.

Opioid use during pregnancy has reached epidemic proportions. Babies are adversely affected as they become physiologically dependent during pregnancy and suffer drug withdrawal following delivery known as Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS).

Accurate diagnosis of NOWS is important because less than 50% of babies exposed to opioids during pregnancy develop NOWS, and false-positives can result in babies unnecessarily receiving pharmacological treatment with corresponding prolonged hospitalization and substantial cost, or false-negatives can result in babies not being treated when they should, potentially leading to serious health complications.

Our Solution

We are bringing the power of proprietary acoustic analysis techniques and Machine Learning technology to patient care. Machine Learning is an effective approach to recognizing correlations from very large, complicated data sets.

PedialyDx NOWS App.

The PedialyDx phone-based “NOWS-App” will automatically record a baby cry, filter and deconstruct the cry into discrete acoustic features, and analyze those features based on our Machine Learning trained algorithms.  NOWS-App will be regulated by the FDA as a Class 2 Device, and has not yet been cleared for sale in the USA.

Our technology can quantify small differences in baby cry acoustics and perform analysis on the resulting acoustic features superior to even the most experienced listeners.

How it works

We are creating a new approach to assessing and treating NOWS, enabled through the insights of our analysis of baby cry acoustics. Our technology provides objective and repeatable assessment of NOWS.

Record a cry

A 10 second recording of a baby’s cry is all that we need to begin matching the infants cry signature with our algorithm.

Upload Cry Recording

After a cry has been recorded, it will be uploaded to our cloud-based system for processing.

Cry Processed

Once processed, the cry will be a evaluated based on its characteristics to diagnose an infants likelihood of NOWS affliction.

Results Returned

Once a diagnosis has been determined, the results will automatically be returned to the PedialyDx app indicating a confidence percentage that a baby is suffering from NOWS.

What’s Next

Autism and other applications.

We also have results demonstrating baby cry as a possible early indicator for autism.
